Abstract
International efforts to address deforestation have proven unable to efficiently tackle the issue, global rates remaining high. For two decades now, the EU has put in place a framework whose objective is to reduce its contribution to illegal logging. However, its prime objective was not the fight against deforestation and, all in all, it was not entirely successful either. The Union thus adopted Regulation 2023/1115 as the centrepiece of a new EU forest protection framework, the legislation building on existing ones but expanding the scope and objectives.
