Abstract
Giving meaning to the extremely rich and dynamic sensory world that surrounds us is a fundamental matter in our daily lives, particularly during development. Infants need to progressively learn to group the vast information that surrounds them into coherent and meaningful perceptual classes. Without perceptual categorization, each entity in the world would be perceived as unique, leaving the observer overwhelmed by the sheer diversity of what they experience in their environment. In this thesis, I will present three studies whose aim was to investigate auditory categorical response in the infant brain. In study 1, I will focus on the development of an innovative approach to investigate categorical response in the adult brain, namely the Fast Periodic Auditory Stimulation (FPAS) combined with electroencephalography (EEG) recordings. Thank to this approach, in study 2, I will show evidence of voice categorization in the 4-month-old infant brain. Lastly, in study 3, I will further explore the auditory object representation of several categories from fine-grained categories (i.e., birds) to broader categories (i.e., animacy). Using multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) on EEG data, I will show how the auditory object representation in the infant brain unfolds compared to the adult brain. Overall, these findings will bring forth evidence of early categorical response in the infant brain, as well as showing (dis)similarities with the responses recorded in adults.
