Abstract
Once described as “one of the best in the church, or in Rome itself ”, the elaborately carved and painted tomb of Bishop Juan Díaz de Coca (1389-1477) in Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome is an excellent example of just how much the proliferation of funerary monuments represented a complex reality which was often concerned with other matters, and which, more often than not, transcended national borders. Based on extensive archival evidence, this chapter reconstructs how Bishop Juan started his funerary programme at Santa Maria sopra Minerva and how he subsequently diverted his attention to a chapel in the cathedral of Burgos.
