Abstract
(en) The overrepresentation of female participants exists in bereavement research. However, few studies systematically examine the extent to which this overrepresentation is related to sampling and recruitment methods. A meta-method review of 33 recent studies that examined gender differences in grief was conducted. The results revealed that the majority of studies focused on older adults and/or widows rather than other bereavements and that random (stratified or not), purposive, and quota sampling strategies were widely used, leading to a more balanced gender ratio of 1 man for 2 women instead of 1:3. Recruitment methods remained under-reported. Reactive convenience methods which are based on the self-selection of participants can induce a set of biases that deserve further investigation.
