This chapter focuses on the weight and political uses of the past in post-conflict settings. It explores how former enemies can engage with postwar memory without regressing into violent conflict. The chapter is divided into three parts. The first part underlines major issues related to working on war memories from philosophical and political sciences perspectives. The second part questions the intergenerational transmission of war memory. It is based on a concrete research project devoted to the transmission of memories related to the genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda. The third and last part highlights lessons for practice and theory. It insists on the management of expectations regarding aims and timing. The chapter asserts that postwar reconstruction is often inconsistent and ineffective—but not impossible.
