- Abstract
- According to Franz Fanon, the colonized’s reflection about its own past, and the critic to colonial historiographical devices, are fundamental components of every anti-colonial political praxis. Fanon’s analysis on the coloniality of historical memory is intrinsically twofold: from a psychiatric perspective, Fanon explores the remembrance conditions of the colonized individual as well as its function in the subjectivation process. However, this therapeutic approach is always sustained by the political reflection on the collective construction of the oppressed’s memory, both in its resistance to colonialism and in its quest for liberation as a sovereign people. Fanon's approach condemns all the essentializyng operations of the historical past by thinking about the creation of meaning from colonial trauma. Thus, he discusses the pillars of western philosophy of history: the hegelian idea of historical memory as the progressive and teleological interiorization of the lived. The de-colonial memory is, therefore, not the inner receptacle in which the heterogeneity of the past-being is incorporated into an uniform identity, but the point of fracture that renders the delimitation of a definitive identity impossible, and at the same time, the starting point of multiples horizons of emancipation.
