The breakup and evaporation of liquid jets is crucial to the efficiency of the combustion process in direct injection engines. Despite its importance, no final consensus concerning the mathematical framework to compute sprays has been reached yet. In the first part of this talk, we will present simulations of spray injection under real engine conditions and tests of different secondary droplet breakup models. In the second part, we will elaborate on the difference between the respective models and on ongoing efforts for the further development of computational techniques to predict droplet breakup and evaporation.
