- Abstract
- This article intends to analyze the specificity of Imagination as a faculty of the soul in the work of the metaphysician Christian Wolff (1679-1754). We will limit our approach to the 'German Metaphysics' (1720), 'Preliminary Discourse on Philosophy in General' (1728), 'Empirical Psychology' (1732), and 'Rational Psychology' (1734). (i) We first investigate the place of both Psychologiæ within Wolff’s system, emphasizing the centrality of the study of the soul [Seele]. (ii) In a second moment, we analyze the main characteristics of the soul and its vis repræsentativa as an operator of the relationship between sensitivity and the faculties of the mind. (iii) Finally, we analyze the modes of production of phantasmata and the association through which Imagination operates in the soul. We conclude by showing that it is in Wolff, contrary to the tradition that preceded him, that imagination appears as a faculty rigorously regulated by the laws of intellect, and not by custom.
