This article analyzes the relationships between the fishing community of Regência, located at the mouth of the Doce River (ES), and its patron saint, São Benedito. These relationships are now weakened by the post-catastrophe context following the collapse of the Fundão dam in Mariana (MG) in 2015 and the resulting contamination of the Doce River. From the perspective of crossroads and Exu, I show how the saint’s presence in Regência is the result of stories of unprecedented and situated encounters, the effects of which are characterized by indeterminacy. Therefore, she is also a figure through which resistance against the future designed for the territory and the community by the responsible companies occurs.
