IbnʿArabī’s Qurʾānic hermeneutics is a central link in the chain of the Sufi exegetical tradition, and a major milestone in Islamic intellectual history. The thought of the Andalusian Shaykh synthetized brilliantly the various hermeneutical methods found in the previous literature and went into their doctrinal and practical implications in greater depth. The apparent peculiarities of his Qurʾānic interpretations should be considered as the result of his particular focus on core issues of the theology of Revelation, and as developments in the fundamentals of Sufi spiritual hermeneutics at large.
