Abstract
By 2060, the world population is expected to have risen beyond 10 billion and the global number of buildings is estimated to double. Many will be reinforced concrete (RC) structures employing RC wall or wall-equivalent systems – particularly mid- and high-rise buildings – to provide stiffness and strength against lateral actions, primarily from wind and earthquakes. RC walls are also increasingly used as a retrofitting and strengthening measure for existing buildings to control displacement demands and mitigate severe damage localisation. The above establishes the key relevance of modeling and design of RC structural wall systems, which constitutes the specific focus of this Special Issue (SI) of the Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering (BEE-SI).
