Abstract
The preservation of industrial chimneys, as part of the industrial heritage, requires a detailed survey of their geometric, mechanical, static and dynamic characteristics, to perform a correct assessment of their structural seismic behaviour, and evaluate reinforcement needs. This paper presents a study on an industrial chimney located in the city of Porto with the aim of: (i) identifying its dynamic behaviour, resorting to in-situ techniques using free and forced vibration, and PCB and MEMS type accelerometers; (ii) determining its seismic behaviour, using linear numerical simulation techniques with shell elements, and material and geometric non-linear simulation with beam elements with fibre sections, through SAP2000 and SeismoStruct structural analysis programs, respectively. The study concludes on the effectiveness of each of the 2 types of accelerometers and dynamic excitation techniques in the study of industrial chimneys, and underlines the importance of non-linear simulations when identifying the seismic behaviour of this type of structures.
