- Abstract
- The aim of this doctoral research is to investigate the art of building during the Imperial period in the port city of Ostia antica, through a detailed study of a specific block of the archaeological site, known as the Isolato delle Trifore. The three buildings of this block, located along the main circulation axis in the western part of the colony, display a chronological development spanning from the 1st century BC to the second half of the 3rd century AD. However, the phases of the remains that are most visible primarily date to the 2nd century AD, a period marked by an intensification of building activity in the city. The study of the traditions and dynamics of construction during this period proves particularly interesting, as they reflect a need to standardize techniques and various operations, with recurring modules and structural solutions aimed at optimizing the building process. The typology of construction techniques and building interventions implemented in the block will therefore be considered within the broader context of the site, port of Rome, in order to approach a certain “art of building” and identify a shared cultural background, using the structures of the Isolato delle Trifore as a “reference block”.
