Abstract
Almost a quarter of the fragments of Eumelus preserved in the Greek Collection on Horse-Medicine (Hippiatrica) are very close to passages in Columella’s 6th book De re rustica. Max Ihm, in his edition of Pelagonius (Teubner, 1892), concluded that Eumelus had drawn from Columella. His opinion was followed by Eugen Oder and Karl Hoppe, the joint editors of the Hippiatrica (Teubner, 1924 and 1927). This contribution would like to shed some more light on the possible connection between Columella and Eumelus, based on a fresh examination of the texts and taking into account the hazards of the textual transmission of agronomic and veterinary literature.
