Abstract
The rule of law in the European Union is under threat. Next to the quickly evolving case-law of the Court of Justice, there is a growing number of instruments in the EU’s toolbox. This chapter explores the origins, transformations and the content of the rule of law as founding value and gives an overview about some of the most important tools to defend it: the Article 7 TEU procedures, the Rule of Law Report by the Commission and the Council’s Rule of Law Dialogue as well as the new Budgetary Conditionality Regulation.
