Abstract
Authenticity has long occupied linguists and educators. Once treated as a defining condition of linguistic data in corpora, later as an aim of communication, it now emerges as a site of epistemic uncertainty in the age of AI. This presentation critically traces that trajectory, reconsidering what authenticity has meant (perhaps always elusively) and what it might mean now. I will invite participants to revisit some (perhaps taken-for-granted) beliefs about what counts as authentic language, data, and learning, and to reflect on how these beliefs shape our research and pedagogical practices. Drawing on examples from SLA analysis, data-driven learning, and language classrooms, I argue that authenticity is not an intrinsic property but a negotiated construct. The presentation will conclude by opening the floor for discussion on how evolving understandings of authenticity might reshape approaches to English language research, teaching, and learning.
