The two English versions of The Siege of Breda (1627)
Unusually, Herman Hugo's Latin account of the Siege of Breda, first published in 1626, was published in two different English translations: one by the Englishman Henry Gage (Ghent, 1627) and the other by the Irishman Gerat Barry (Leuven, 1627). While the two translators had both served in the besieging army (Gage in Sir Edward Parham's Regiment, Barry in the Earl of Tyrone's Regiment), their versions not only show different approaches to the work of translation, but also different conceptualisations of how their potential English and Irish readerships would relate to the history recounted.
