Abstract
Early-modern translators of the Bible had to make sense of texts in ancient languages without the benefit of the centuries of philological, historical and archaeological discoveries on which today’s biblical interpreters are able to draw. One result of this is that there are animals mentioned in early-modern Bible translations (not only in English, but also in other vernaculars) that will be sought for in vain in their modern counterparts: satyrs, cockatrices, unicorns, mermaids, and goblins.
