- (en) In a context of political crisis over migration management in Europe, citizens’ initiatives are emerging to build solidarity with migrants. These hospitality initiatives mobilise thousands of citizens, give rise to innovative projects and trigger reactions ranging from criminalisation to the appropriation of practices by public authorities. On the basis of two ethnographic research projects carried out in the city of Brussels and in the Hesbaye region, in Belgium, we propose a two-fold analysis of this collective action: one focusing on the humanising effects of encounters between citizens and migrants; and the other on the issues of invisibilisation and overvisibility, both as a consequence of migration policies and as a means of action within a social movement. This approach will enable us to join the debate on the articulation between political and humanitarian action.
