When developing interactive applications, data flow diagrams are one possible form of task model that focuses on sequencing aspects rather than on structural aspects of a task to be modelled. As such, they are going against the current of traditional task models which graft sequencing aspects on top of structural aspects. The function chaining graph, an extension of data flow diagrams, is examined as an alternative way of providing a task model that could serve as a first starting point for deriving other models pertaining to a user interface design. Some advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed and compared with respect to traditional models
