Abstract
Despite the EU's ambitious environmental agenda, youth often express dissatisfaction with how their concerns are addressed, particularly regarding climate change and sustainability. The chapter examines the mechanisms through which youth engage with EU environmental policy, such as the National Youth Councils and the UN Youth Delegates program, while identifying their limitations. Based on interviews with youth delegates at key international environmental meetings, the chapter reveals that while these mechanisms are viewed positively, youth still feel underrepresented, often resorting to protests as a means to make their voices heard. The chapter concludes that more inclusive and effective participation mechanisms are needed, and that youth should be given greater attention in policymaking, considering their future role in implementing environmental policies. It also suggests further research on youth involvement in other policy areas and international contexts to better understand and improve youth engagement in environmental governance.
