Abstract
(en) The European Union’s role in Arctic governance of today, highlights the region’s strategic importance and the evolution of EU policy over the past two decades. Initially focused on environmental issues such as pollution and climate change, the EU’s Arctic policy has expanded to address economic, social, and geopolitical dimensions. The chapter explores the key pillars of EU Arctic policy, including climate change mitigation, sustainable resource management, and the protection of indigenous rights, particularly those of the Sámi people. It also discusses the challenges the EU faces in the Arctic, such as geopolitical tensions, multilateral cooperation complexities, and policy coherence, as well as its limited influence as an observer in the Arctic Council. The chapter further examines the EU’s response to rapidly changing environmental conditions in the Arctic and its efforts to promote a sustainable and peaceful Arctic through initiatives like the European Green Deal. The conclusion emphasizes the EU’s role in balancing environmental, economic, and geopolitical objectives while navigating significant challenges in the region’s governance.
