Abstract
(en) This book, now in its second edition, examines the European Union (EU) as a pivotal actor in environmental governance. Recognized for its leadership in pioneering environmental protection among regional organizations, the EU, supported by its 28 member states and key institutions, has enacted extensive environmental laws and serves as a model for global innovation. The work reflects on previously discussed themes from the 1st edition, while taking into consideration the impact of significant events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine invasion, which have reshaped its policies, notably through the European Green Deal. The book also showcases some indispensable additions such as ocean governance and the EU, arctic governance and the EU and the role of youth in shaping EU policy. The persistence of a global environmental crisis further underscores the urgency of the EU's role in protecting ecological stability. This edition aims to provide empirical insights into environmental challenges, adopt interdisciplinary approaches, and analyze issues across varying scales, showcasing the adaptability of the EU governance structure. Contributors address diverse sectors, emphasizing the necessity of integrated solutions and collaboration, affirming the EU’s ongoing influence in global environmental governance despite geopolitical tensions.
