The invention concerns a method for olefin metathesis that comprises bringing said olefins into contact with a catalyst previously activated by par heating to a temperature of between 100 and 1000°C in a non-reducing gas atmosphere, said catalyst comprising at least one inorganic material having a hierarchised porosity consisting of at least two elementary spherical particles, each one of said spherical particles having a maximum diameter of 200 um and comprising metal oxide particles of a maximum size of 300 nm containing at least one metal chosen from tungsten, molybdenum, rhenium, cobalt, nickel, tin, ruthenium, iron and titanium alone or in a mixture, said metal oxide particles being present in a matrix comprising silicon oxide, said matrix having microporous walls consisting of zeolite entities and/or proto-zeolite entities.
