Abstract
During the 5th and 6th centuries, the coastal littoral of Northern France underwent profound and far reaching changes. The Roman military installations of the Litus Saxonicum gradually disappeared, the remaining villas were abandoned and new types of settlements steadily appear in the archaeological record. Exploring this change across a wide variety of different site types is important for understanding both the final end of the Roman landscape and the creation of a new settlement pattern. We will examine how these we should view these changes in relation to their contemporary environments and how they related to other maritime communities on both sides of the English Channel. Finally, we will discuss whether this period of change really merits the complex and vague terminology of ‘crisis’.
