Abstract
(en) In order to illustrate the potential of the “technical approach” in the study of ancient wall paintings, the ancient city of Ostia appears as an excellent case of study. The harbour of Rome, offers indeed a particularly rich field of investigation, with its numerous testimonies of Roman wall Painting, covering more than seven centuries of Roman art, from the 2nd c. BC to the 5th c. AD. In the last years, recent studies have brought to light several fragmentary contexts from the earlier periods, showing a previously unknown page of the history of the city, which was occupied by richly decorated domus, not inferior in terms of quality to the finest buildings in the capital. For this reason, a collaboration was set up between the Centre d’Étude des Monde Antiques of the Université catholique de Louvain (CEMA), the Centro Studi Pittura Romana Ostiense (CeSPRO) and the Istituto per la Conservazione e la Valorizzazione dei Beni Culturali of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Florence (ICVBC). This collaboration has been established as part of the FPO Project (Fragmentary Paintings of Ostia), whose intent is to understand the wall paintings of Ostia through its fragmentary remains. Thanks to the expertise of the ICVBC in the field of archaeometry applied to ancient painting, it was possible to examine a series of samples from different contexts of the city, in order to identify the raw materials used and understand the execution techniques. This paper presents the results of the analyses carried out on the Fourth Style paintings, which have led to very interesting conclusions on the dynamics of production and the work of the craftsmen in Ostia.
