- During its long history, the ancient city of Ostia was confronted to a series of challenges, partly due to the great instability of the Tiber Delta, which determined important changes in the landscape and the city itself, causing floods, silting, rising groundwater, movement of the coastline and even earthquakes. These challenges had a profound impact on the life of the inhabitants, who needed to take important countermeasures in order to adapt and survive. The archaeological remains of the city of Ostia still bear the traces of these phenomena, showing that, in every situation, the city and its population have shown adaptability and resilience, but also a capacity to keep the original urban layout over the centuries by re-using, recycling and requalifying spaces, buildings and even building materials. This contribution intends to share some thoughts about how to read and interpret the traces left on the walls, reconstructing the strategies adopted by Ostian builders to overcome or prevent natural catastrophes.
