Abstract
The aim of this work was to identify the conditions under which social participation contributes to health. First, we developed the Social Participation Index to overcome the limitations of existing indicators. Second, the conceptual model of Berkman et al. (2000) was updated. This establishes a link between social integration and health. The variables in the model were collected in a national survey carried out with the Mutualité Chrétienne (N = 16,981). Of these, 4,988 respondents agreed to allow access to their personal data relating to their healthcare. Regression analyses and structural equation modelling confirmed the relevance of the updated model. Third, the role of motivations to volunteer was studied as a modulator of the psychological processes involved in the relationship between social participation and health. The results definitively show that the associated benefits vary according to the type of motivation activated. This research confirms the protective role of social ties and provides concrete tools to support clinical intervention of the social prescription type.
