Abstract
The article provides a lexicographical analysis of the term ἐπισιτισμός (“provisions”). Starting with its attestations in the Septuagint and comparing them with occurrences in Greek literature, it highlights the specific nuances of its use in biblical texts. Notably, the term appears without the military connotation typical of its attestations in Greek literature and very likely carries a salvific nuance. Furthermore, its usage in the LXX influences its unique occurrence in the New Testament (Lk 9:12), where Luke creates a wordplay between the meaning of the name “Bethsaida” (“house of provisions”; Lk 9:10), and the disciples’ request in 9:12. In this way, a new solution to the text-critical issues related to the variants in Lk 9:10 is provided, and fresh exegetical insights are highlighted.
