From syntactic categories to prosodic profiles and pragmatic functions, corpus- linguistic methods have been widely used to document the many facets of discourse markers in a variety of contexts. The focus of this chapter is on quantitative studies of DMs, where the aim is to observe robust tendencies of distribution, patterning, and variation, either as a class or for individual members of the category. We then present the results of a quantitative categorical study of DMs on the basis of a multi-genre corpus of spoken French, where we draw attention to the relation between DM function and DM source syntactic category. Thus, we show that corpus linguistics is a reliable method not only for empirical purposes but also with a theoretical goal, addressing definition and categorization issues.
