- Summary The article analyzes the logical contributions of the Mohist Canons and discusses the so-called question of Chinese logic. Excerpt from the Introduction These Books are generally referred to as “Mohist Canons” and include the Canons themselves, upper part (Jingshang 經上) and lower part (Jingxia 經下), the Explanations of the Upper part of the Canons (Jingshuoshang 經說上) and of their Lower part (Jingshuoxia 經說下), the Great Selection (Daqu 大取) and the Small Selection (Xiaoqu 小取). The upper part of the Canons is a collection of extremely short sentences, looking like definitions and dealing with ethical, epistemological, geometrical or logical notions. Their Explanations often add substance to the definitions or clarify them by giving examples. In the present chapter, we will concentrate on notions which - pending further considerations - one would spontaneously qualify as logical. We will conclude with a short appreciation of the contributions of the Later Mohists and with a discussion of the so-called question of Chinese logic.
