Abstract
The upgrading of renewable bio-based ethanol to valuable platform chemicals is a cornerstone of the transition to a more sustainable development. Here, ethanol production technologies are briefly presented. From this, catalytic routes for the upgrading of ethanol to value-added chemicals are reviewed. We focus on arguably the most important bioethanol-derived platform chemicals: acetaldehyde, ethylene, 1-butanol and 1,3-butadiene. Heterogeneous catalyst developments are described in relationship with the production process. This chapter highlights both the opportunities to take and the ongoing challenges to tackle, in order to transform academic research in this field into an industrial breakthrough in integrated biorefineries.
