Abstract
Arnold L. Demain passed away on April 3, 2020, just shy of his 93rd birthday, from complications due to COVID-19 infection. He led an exemplary life as a scientist and humanitarian. In 2017, the Journal of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (JIMB) published a special issue entitled “Arnold Demain—Industrial microbiologist extraordinaire” to coincide with his 90th birthday (Baltz et al., 2017). It is with great sadness that we honor Arny this final time. Arny’s impact on industrial microbiology and biotechnology, and on the many scientists whom he has mentored and influenced over many decades, have been documented in commentaries by Joan Bennett, Satosi O¯mura, and Erick Vandamme(Bennett, 2017; O¯mura, 2017, 2021; Vandamme, 2020, 2021). Many of “Arny’s army and friends” have contributed articles to the previous and/or current special issues. As guest editors, we would like to pass on a few personal recollections that further exemplify Arny’s character as an extraordinary colleague and human being.
