Abstract
This chapter starts with a claim: the “Union of Equality” programme developed by the von der Leyen Commission can be considered, and then analysed, as a specific political doctrine. In social sciences, a political doctrine can be defined as a set of relatively integrated representations about the world and its future – in this case, ideas about European integration as a process, and about the European Union as a political system. A political doctrine is at the same time a vision of the world, a discourse on the word, an orientation for action, and a means of forging an identity. Eventually, it is also a power issue. Building on this conception of the “Union of Equality” as a comprehensive political doctrine and its multiple dimensions, we will be able to explore its main features.
