Abstract
This chapters provides an examination of how Nietzsche relates the effects of the acceleration characteristic of modernity with an apparent impossibility of cultural transformation through art, in the wake of what he saw as the failure of the first Festspiele in Bayreuth. The Wagnerian idea of the public’s profound need for art serves as the guiding thread of my analysis, as an idea that Nietzsche initially borrowed from the composer, but then revisits critically in the late 1870s. To evaluate the applicability of Nietzsche’s critical analysis to today’s context, I conclude with brief reflections on the effects of the technical developments in means of music distribution on how we now engage with musical works of art.
