Introducing edible insects into animal feed in Cameroon: a new opportunity

Abstract
The population of Cameroon triples every thirty years, which is increasing the demand for proteins. Edible insects represent acceptable food for fish and livestock that naturally feed on insects. Unsurprisingly, there are numerous of examples of feed formulations based on whole raw or dried insects. The objective of this study was to determine what place insects could take as a natural and sustainable source of protein in aquaculture and livestock feeds in Cameroon. To elucidate this question we made survey of the animal production sector, with an emphasis on aquaculture, poultry farming and pig farming. Then we analysed the potential of edible insects and the opportunities for their valorisation in the animal production sector in Cameroon. The socioeconomic and technical data collected from April to August 2018 from 32 feed mills and 72 breeders (aquaculturists, poultry pig farmers) in central Cameroon. The main feedstuffs used are corn, soybean meal, peanut meal, concentrate and fishmeal. The cost of these different feedstuffs changes according to the growing seasons, availability on the local market, and quality. The perception of breeders and feed producers about the use of insects in animal feed is mixed; breeders are more enthusiastic than feed producers about the idea of integrating insect-based meal into feed compositions. However, the convergence of all the players involved in the value chain should ensure the good quality of the finished product, its societal acceptance and the technical and economic performance of the farms, but the crucial question will remain the price of the final products and their availability all along the year.
