Abstract
This introductory text sets out the scientific project underlying the book (Educational markets and segregation. Global trends and singular experiences from Belgium and Chile), and introduces the three parts of the book. It emphasizes that, paradoxically, school segregation has emerged as a public problem at the moment in which the longstanding movement towards the democratisation of education ha generalised. The role played by market policies in education is underlined and the theoretical and normative assumptions of the book are examined. The Belgian and Chilean cases are depicted along with the methodological dimensions of this "mirror comparison", its assets and limitations.
