Abstract
In this communication, we investigate how to comprehensively model dual-polarized channels. We start with a theoretical description of the relevant mechanisms and parameters describing dual-polarized propagation. We then provide an overview o the most recent experimental results related to dual-polarized channels. It is namely observed that even the first-order statistics of the uplink channel matrix might not be equal to those of the downlink channel. In particular, the XPD might be different on the up- and downlinks and depend on the considered transmitted polarization. Finally, we propose an innovative and realistic model of dual-polarized channels accounting for these observations. The main advantage of the model is its simple analytical formulation, implying that it can easily be used as an abstract formalism to design adequate space-time coding or precoding techniques.
