Abstract
(en) From the «Existenzminimum» till today, the industrialized housing incarnated for many architects, a solution for the future (Davies, 2005). The Post-Modern turn is one particular episode of this quest, seeking to merge two opposing concepts: the mass housing and the individual experience of the habitat. It offers a hybrid ideal: the mass customization, a contradictory term opening the way to the “kit architecture”, made of components that are manufactured industrially, and those that are assembled according to the user’s choice. A customization that actually derives from the process of depersonalization: an architecture becomes a system. This fragile balance nevertheless leads to reversible architectures, Which are evolutive and flexible. Focusing on ill known Belgian cases (1970-1980) offers new insights in mass customization and an opportunity to change its definition, its products, its results and its relevance to current issues: frugality and resilience. In this scientific investigation embedded in a cinematographic approach, the inhabited places, the protagonists and the archives nourish a field investigated by cinematic means. It confronts three cases on three different scales: the house, the neighborhood and the city sector. Imagined at the same time, closely intertwined With their territory, they represent the local interpretation of globalizing architectural principles. It seeks to understand the implemented forms, to document the reception of their users, to evaluate the efficacy of the tools, in order to discern the levers of appropriation and the architectural forms to come. Observing these experiences today allows us to redefine the role of an architect. Moving the limits of the traditional expertise of the inhabitants and the designers, these experiences shed light on a socially sustainable architecture, an architecture that produces a qualitative link between the inhabitants and their habitats.
