Abstract
Besides this ‘classical’ Numeruswechsel, which, in general, does not really have an influence on the content of the text, the cases of the Numeruswechsel between the 1st and the 3rd person as present within the Hebrew form of the Book of Deuteronomy, really have an impact on the content of the text. Within the LXX, these problems that characterise the MT are absent. Nevertheless, especially in the light of the textual data in the Dead Sea scrolls literature and the Samaritan Pentateuch, and the possibility that unintentional misreadings can be at the origin of the variants, it would be too easy to quickly conclude that the LXX has smoothed out these problems of the Hebrew text, thus giving absolute priority to the MT. Regardless of the origin of the variant readings in MT and LXX of this specific type of Numeruswechsel, they confront us anyway with problems of content – not to say ‘theological’ problems – of the text of Deuteronomy.
