- Abstract
- The exegesis of the Song of Songs by the Greek Church Fathers was polymorphic in spite of their common methodological presuppositions. Theodoret of Cyrus paints a varied picture of the exegesis of the book at his own time (ca. 430 C.E.). Theodore of Mopsuestia is not alone in his non-religious reading. A. shows by means of a specific passage (Cant 2:1) how the 'Catena of Procopius' opens up a great variety of interpretations, and tries to identify the hermeneutical principles leading to such variety.
