"In our paper, we will claim that, once lexicalized, some compounds undergo a further process by which they end up as derivations. This claim implies that there is not only a continuum between syntax and compounding, but also between compounding and derivation. In other words, it would mean that, just like Germanic languages, French makes use of “affixoids”, i.e. an intermediate class of elements in between stems and affixes (cf. ten Hacken 2000, Meesters 2002, Booij 2005a & 2005b). The process by which the stem of a compound develops into an affix is not an instance of lexicalization, but will be motivated to illustrate a particular case of grammaticalization (cf. Booij 2005a). From a theoretical point of view, this means that lexicalization and grammaticalization will not be considered converse, but complementary (cf. Lehmann 2002, Brinton & Traugott 2005)."
