Abstract
The Louvain International Database of Spoken English Interlanguage (LINDSEI) contains informal interviews conducted in English with intermediate to advanced level learners of English as a foreign language. ‘Foreign words’, i.e. words from other languages than English (predominantly from the learners’ mother tongue), sometimes feature in both the interviewers’ and the learner interviewees’ contributions. This paper seeks to turn a ‘fluency’ spotlight on the use of foreign words in learner interviewee speech in LINDSEI by exploring whether or not they contribute to fluent (i.e. smooth flowing) discourse and qualify as ‘fluencemes of production’ (Götz 2013). The qualitative investigation of foreign words in four LINDSEI learner varieties (LINDSEI_Dutch, LINDSEI_German, LINDSEI_French and LINDSEI_Italian) reveals that these words should be integrated in fluency research as the members of two of the three most frequent categories (namely ‘lexical bridges’ and ‘discourse/pragmatic bridges’) can be seen to help the learners to cope with planning pressure and to keep talking in the specific context of informal interviews.
