Abstract
Syrian refugees in Belgium were a little over 9000 in 2017. They represented about 0.1% of all Syrian refugees outside Syria, and 1.1% of Syrian refugees within the EU. Most of them arrived in Belgium recently as asylum seekers and were usually granted international protection quickly after their arrival. More recently, Syrians have also gradually arrived in Belgium by other legal means, especially through family reunification. As a result, the population of Syrian origin has increased rapidly, and was estimated at around 23,000 in 2017. In this chapter, we assemble statistics from various sources to document the population of Syrian origin living in Belgium. We first describe migration flows, distinguishing between asylum migration and other types of migration. Next, we show how these flows have influenced the size and the composition of the population of Syrian origin living in Belgium. Finally, we briefly describe family arrangements and labor market participation of the population of Syrian origin
