Le cardinal Joseph-Désiré Mercier, archevêque de Malines (1906-1926) fut l'incarnation de la résistance à l'occupant allemand durant la Première Guerre mondiale en Belgique. Son encyclique Patriotisme et endurance (Noël 1914) eut un retentissement considérable, tant en Belgique qu'à l'étranger. Intransigeant en public, Mercier s'est cependant résolu lentement à une possible paix négociée… Cardinal Joseph-Désiré Mercier, Archbishop of Mechelen (1906-1926) was the epitome of resistance to the German occupation during the First World War in Belgium. His encyclical Patriotism and Endurance (Christmas 1914) had a considerable impact, both in Belgium and abroad.
