Abstract
Reinforced concrete (RC) core walls form the backbone of medium-rise and tall buildings, resisting both gravity loads and essentially lateral loads from wind and earthquake actions. In the last couple of decades there has been an effort by the international research community to experimentally test non-planar RC wall units due to the previous paucity of evidence for their seismic behaviour. However, due to laboratory or economical limitations, most of the tests on RC U-shaped walls were conducted using cyclic quasi-static loading protocols. As such, the project “Smart ALLoys for WALLs: towards durable structures with long service lives and minimal seismic residual displacements” (ERIES-ALL4wALL) was launched to focus on the dynamic testing of two large-scale 40-ton RC U-shape core walls – including 25 tons of additional mass, using the shake table at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), Portugal. This experimental program was funded through the Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies (ERIES) Transnational Access program. The wall units had the same geometry and reinforcement layout as those employed for the quasi-static tests conducted in 2022 at UCLouvain, Belgium. A blind prediction competition was launched to estimate key engineering demand parameters for the first wall unit, reinforced with traditional steel. This paper presents an overview of the test setup and the blind prediction competition rules. The authors will present a summary and analysis of the submitted predictions, together with detailed description of the best predictions submitted by participants, during the conference proceedings.
