With the development of technology and the advancement of the times, digital educational games have become a concern in the field of educational research (Reinhardt 2017; Hung et al. 2018; Peterson et al. 2021). The present paper reviews empirical research into the cognitive and affective impact of digital game-based language learning and more specifically on L2 Speaking ability. This systematic review intends to answer the following questions: [1]. Whether game-based learning is effective for improving L2 speaking ability? [2]. Which affective factors have been found to modulate the cognitive impact of game-based language learning?[3]. Which types of interventions and research designs are employed to evaluate the impact of digital game-based language learning?
