Abstract
Landslides, falls and debris can cause a natural damming of a river (i.e. landslide dams). In case of dam failure, material composition is one of the main factors that influence the dam breach. In this study, four dam-breaching experiments with different material composition were conducted to analyzed its influence on the breach process and hydraulic characteristics. The dam breach process can be divided into four stages associated with the hydraulic parame-ters and the erosion patterns. The peak discharge decreases while the residual dam height in-creases with the increase in the median diameter d50 of the material. The erosion pattern in the initiation stage is mainly backward erosion, while surface erosion can be observed during the following stages. The surface erosion rate first increases and then decreases during dam breaching, and it may transfer to a linearized decrease with the increases in d50. A new longi-tudinal dam evolution pattern is proposed by considering the erosion-deposition mechanism.
