- In 2020, amidst an unprecedented global pandemic and in adherence to governmental directives, families sought refuge within their homes, grappling with uncertainty about the future. It is within this exceptional context that I investigated the memories and future thoughts of Belgians. Across three questionnaires collected at different key points of the pandemic over a 15-month period, participants were tasked with recalling specific memories and envisioning personal future events. They also predicted the evolution of the pandemic, the role of the virus in the future, and the societal changes on a collective level. In this presentation, I aim to reflect on how predictions about the future are influenced by both personal factors (such as the ability to remember and imagine the future, and personality traits) and collective factors (such as social identification).
