Abstract
The episkeuastai of Athens were a commission in charge of the maintenance of the sanctuaries of Attica. In this article, the few sources that mention them are confronted. I suggest a new interpretation of the role of the episkeuastai as a financial instrument in the service of the state for controlling the revenues and expenses of the sanctuaries. The practical and legal reasons for implementing such a system are addressed, as well as its political implications, in particular at the border of Attica.
